U.S. Pipe - Wheland Foundry Site
I’ve been thinking about what it is that will become of the U.S. Pipe/Wheland Foundry site. I’m very intrigued after hearing the Mayor discuss a landmark design of some sort to replace it. While going through this in my head, I thought of the large amount of potentially re-usable material on that site and how could it be applied to the AIA's homeless housing projects. That foundry and others like it were the backbone of Chattanooga’s growth for a long time. I realize it contributed to the pollution of the city (unknowingly or not), but it still was a symbol of industrial strength. My family has entered the city the same way for many years, rounding Moccasin Bend and passing by the large foundry. I have in my own simple little mind sort of romanticized the structure a bit. So, I thought what does this place have left to give and began tinkering with a “what if..” scenario of salvaging donated usable parts of those structures and implementing them in a modular way.
